I’ve been in retail (women’s apparel and accessories) for so long it is hard for me to get excited about fashion these days. So when something rocks my world I just have to share it. During my 24 plus years in this industry, I’ve seen brands and designers come and go. I’ve witnessed others come, go, then come back again only to go a second time. The good news is, I have also known designers who have stayed and weathered the ebb and flow of the apparel industry’s ever-changing tides. These designers are the really good ones. They know how to change just enough to keep us interested but not so much that we are left scratching our heads. John Fluevog is one such designer.
Recently, I took a little vacation to Denver and was delighted to find a Fluevog store there in the heart of Larimer Square. Which, as a side note, is a great location to shop, eat, and drink in downtown Denver. For dinner, check out Bistro Vendome and be instantly transported to Paris with their delectable offerings of French cuisine and French style decor. Now back to shoes….
I am not a fan of over the top nuttiness when it comes to clothing and accessories. In part, I think, because I’ve been there done that. I was in art school in Chicago in the early 1980s at the height of the Punk movement in that city. That’s Art School + Chicago + Punk = outrageous dressing, accessories, hair, and make-up! It was a fun time in fashion and in history. I am still a fan of individual expression through clothing and statement-making accessories. I love an interesting mix of art and style in fashion but I try to temper my own expressive fashion urges these days with balanced sagacity. The last thing I want is to look like is a nutty older lady all dressed up with no place to go. My new Fluevogs are just the ticket for making a statement in a measured amount.
I believe this shoe is called the “Enthusiast”. I like that about them too; such a great word. They are not the most outrageous of Fluevog offerings but they are not the most tame either. To my eye, they have the perfect mix of wearability and visual impact. I can pair them with everything from jeans to a fancy dress. In addition, these shoes are super comfortable. My 55-year-old feet do not fair well in heels anymore and I own very few, but these shoes are built for comfort. I am wearing them to a wedding this month and we will see how they manage on the dance floor.
ARE THEY WORTH IT?
This shoe cost $269.00 which is no small sum but the investment is worth it. Why? Fluevog shoes are well-made with the best possible materials and in limited quantities making them super unique. Also, Fluevogs transcend fashion trends, so they will be wearable for years to come. Finally, I know that my purchase helps to support this brand. As you come to know me through this blog, you will discover that I am an “enthusiast” for and have strong convictions about supporting what I love with my hard-earned cash. I don’t know about other industries, but in fashion, if we don’t support the designers and companies we love, they will go away leaving us with few choices for our wardrobes.
Buy and wear what you love and let me know what your favorite brand of shoes is.
